History
Established on April 1, 1975, Fırat University’s Faculty of Humanities initially included the Department of Turkish Language and Literature.. In the 1976-1977 academic year, the Department of Anthropology was added. By 1980, the Faculty expanded to include ten departments: Anthropology, Archaeology, Art History, Geography, Ancient Near Eastern Languages, Library Science, History, Social Sciences, Turkish Language and Literature, and Foreign Languages.
In 1983, the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities were merged. The Department of Anthropology was renamed the Department of Sociology, and the Department of Geography was established in 1990. The Department of Western Languages and Literatures began offering courses in 2005.
Following a reorganization in 2010, the Faculty of Science and Humanities was divided into the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, which now includes seven active departments (Department of Western Languages and Literatures, Department of Geography, Department of Contemporary Turkic Dialects and Literatures, Department of Sociology, Department of History, Department of Art History, Department of Turkish Language and Literature) along with Department of English Translation and Interpreting in preparation.
Additional departments, such as Archaeology, Eastern Languages and Literatures, and Slavic Languages and Literatures, are planned for future development.
